Make your own vinyl records at home!

Photo from the Kickstarter page.
With less than two days to go the Kickstarter fundraising campaign for DRC (Desktop Record Cutter) is a success.

Pledging 7 000 Australian Dollars (that's 5 969 US $, 3 672 £ or 4 687 €) would land you your very own disk cutting machine. But since that option is all sold out we'd go for the 85 AUD method of support giving you up to 15 minutes of your own music or whatever cut on a vinyl record by the guys behind DRC.

Happy Holidays!

As our social media feeds fill up with Xmas greetings we can somewhat smugly call ourselves ahead of the loop.

Stationed in Sweden Radio Dupree has the privilege of starting the holiday celebrations for real already on Christmas Eve.
So we've seen Santa arrive and leave, and we've eaten and drunk to our hearts content.

But to all you a late arrivals we say "welcome to the Holidays and enjoy it as much as we are."

Cheers!

Michael Leonhart produced Kickstarter project from G. T. Thomas

"150 copies of interactive art odyssey – set to the tune of 8 exotic pop songs on collectible vinyl postcards."

That's how Postacard from your mind is presented on the Kickstarter page started by G.T. Thomas.
Who's G.T. Thomas? Well, we first heard of her as a Steely Dan fan way back and then she did a record in 2011 titled The Lucky Pedestrian Years. We played it here on Radio Dupree.

She's currently living in Amsterdam, Holland and her plan is to raise the money to get this latest project done with Steely Dan band member and solo artist Michael Leonhart.

Read more about the Kickstarter project and if you like what you read consider backing it. (Deadline is December 13!)
Here's the first song from the project:

Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho out on SACD again

Steely Dan's Aja from 1977 and Gaucho from 1980 has just been released once more on SACD in Japan.
We at Radio Dupree thought that this audio format was long gone, but apparently not!

Both releases based on DSD masters made in 2010 from the original analog tapes.

Expect them to be available as expensive imports where you live (if it's not in Japan), but with the online options around these days a better price is just one or two clicks away!

More on the SACD format.
OK. So what's this DSD then?

What Zappa music would you like to hear today?

Frank Zappa died on December 4, 21 years ago. What Zappa piece or album do you think is appropriate to listen to today? Let us know. Write a comment below!
Anyway, the Radio Dupree staff has loaded the playlist with as much Zappa we are allowed to play. (Yep, live365.com has certain rules about that, but there is still room for a lot of good music).

Walter Becker in December

walterbecker.com Photo: Sandrine Lee
Donning our Walter Becker Circus Money T-shirts seconds after we realised we've neglected that great album from 2008, we promised ourselves that December 2014 would be the month when tracks from Circus Money props up not only the Radio Dupree playlist but our listeners lives as well.

While perfectly useable as a Christmas gift, this album should be given as a "Life Gift". It is THAT GOOD! And all that without any gratuitous nudity. Or maybe because of.

Whatever.

Enjoy today, next week, Christmas and the rest of your life with a copy of Circus Money within reach.

P.S.
Radio Dupree is the station where you can here the bonus/rare stuff like Bob Is Not Your Uncle Anymore (Demo) from the Downtown Canon digital single, Bob Is Not Your Uncle Anymore (Radio Edit) and Circus Money Dub (Instrumental Remix)  from the Somebody's Saturday Night digital single, Dark Horse Dub (Japanese bonus album track) as well as the elusive Circus Money Hammerhead Remix released as a free download for newsletter subscribers in January 2009. You get the drift. We'll be no stranger to Walter's previous album 11 Tracks of Whack or his collaboration with John Beasley on the music for Mose the Fireman as told by Michel Keaton.

And if Walter or his associated should happen read this:
2015 would be a nice year to release some of the music you've been recording lately! Yes ... we haven't heard any news about any new recordings but surely those guitars and other gear bought in the past five or so years must've been put to good use?

贅沢ないいわけ: File only release from パスピエ/Passepied

Cover art for the song/file
パスピエ/Passepied, today released a brand new song titled 贅沢ないいわけ (Zeitakuna īwake) that means Lyxury excuse (according to Google Translate) or I mean a luxury (says Bing Translator).

We mention this not only because we like the band, but because it is also an alternative release compared to the special physical extra goodies packaging that seem to be very prevalent in the Japanese music business.

This time around the song comes as a plain sound file. No physical CD. Although a little extra is that one onlite site - mora.jp - offers a high resolution 88.2kHz/24bit FLAC version for 540 Yen (4.65 US$/3.7 €). That is twice the price of the regular file.

Banned From Utopia on tour again

Left to right: Robert Martin, Ray White, Chad Wackerman, Jamie Kime, Tom Fowler and Albert Wing.
The Frank Zappa sidemen band Banned From Utopia started their European tour yesterday in Umeå, Sweden.
They opened the set with Chunga's Revenge and then played a varied mix of songs from Zappa's carreer. There were well known songs as I'm The Slime and Zomby Woof, there were more obscure instrumentals as Mar-queson's Chicken. The regular set ended with Bamboozled By Love and City Of Tiny Lites, where Bongo Fury veteran Denny Walley joined in on slide guitar.

The musicianship of this band is great although there were a couple of obvious mistakes on stage, but they are excused since they did their first rehearsal earlier the same day.
The crowd wanted more and the boys came in for encores twice. One of the last songs was Whipping Post (the Allman Brothers song), just as singer and keyboardist Robert Martin promised The Swedish Broadcasting one week before the show.

Tonight they play in Oslo. More tour information here.

The 100th Zappa album on its way

"The 100th Release, Produced in it its Entirety by FZ, will be available to order next month on Zappa Records."
This is the message from Zappa.com. Has to be the long awaited Dance Me This album which Frank Zappa described as follows to Guitarist Magazine in 1993: "a Synclavier album which is designed to be used by modern dance groups."
There are rumours that the music may include contributions by Spoonman, some members of the Tuvan singers and keyboardist Mats Öberg. Öberg recently told the Swedish Broadcasting that he was very excited to find out if Zappa had used some of the things he played for Zappa back in 1991, on the album.

Zappa.com also mentions a new Vaulternative Concert "in your near future", the celebration of FZ's 75th anniversary of his arrival on this planet, and that ROXY the Movie has been sent off to SXSW for consideration for their Film Festival.

Bob Dylan's The Basement Tapes Complete coming this November

The legendary and much bootlegged Basement Tapes that Bob Dylan recorded with The Band in 1967 will finally get an official release November 2014.

The description promises a 6-disc set including 138 tracks compiled from meticulously restored original tapes. A 120 page deluxe-bound book containing rare and unseen photographs and memorabilia plus extensive liner notes.

Looks like the perfect XMas gift for those that got the 47 disc Complete Album Collection Vol. 1 last year.

1970's hit machine pondering comeback

Quote:

"Too poppy for prog rock, too glossy for heavy rock, too unstylish for glam rock and just way too over the top for punks."

Who are we talking about? Electric Light Orchestra and Jeff Lynne! Who according to this article in the Telegraph made a great return show and might be tempted to make a comeback.

There has been speculation among fans of Kate Bush wether her current run of shows in London would be recorded for a DVD/Bluray.

A few of those attending the September 16 show have reported that they've received a letter informing them that their seats have been changed. And the reason is the recording off the show for an upcoming DVD.

There's unconfirmed talk that the recordings will be of three shows;  16, 17 and 19.

New Bowie compilation with a few new songs

David Bowie celebrates 50 years of recorded works with a new compilation album.
The title is Nothing Has Changed and compiles tracks from every period of Bowie’s career. The release features a new single - Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime), that will be released as a limited edition 10” single and digital download. The album also features a previously unreleased Let Me Sleep Beside You from the Toy album sessions.

Kate Bush sets new chart record

With eight albums simultaneously in the UK Top 40 album chart Kate Bush this week becomes the first female in chart history to do just that.  All of course thanks to the hoopla surrounding her comeback to the stage 35 years after her first and so far only tour.

But eight albums in the Top 40 isn't where it ends. An additional three of her albums make the Top 75:

6    The Whole Story
9    Hounds Of Love
20  50 Words For Snow
24  The Kick Inside
26  The Sensual World
37  The Dreaming
38  Never For Ever
40  Lionheart
43  Aerial
44  Director's Cut
49  The Red Shoes

And speaking of Kate Bush we'll check out one of the sold out shows on September 13 as well as having her Never For Ever as our Album of The Month here on Radio Dupree.

Weekend music: This is why we prefer ゲスの極み乙女。 to Nicki Minaj

At the time of writing this American rapper Nicki Minaj's latest "controversial" song titled Anaconda is 500 000 views from 100 million on YouTube while the new one from Japanese band ゲスの極み乙女。 (Gesu no kiwami otome.) is closing in on 80 000.
Nicki Minaj: Thanks, but no thanks.
We guess both Nicki and Gesu are doing fine, but we prefer both the song and the video from the latter. Titled アソビ (Asobi) it is filmed in 4K on mobile phones and heaps more fun that Nicki's by-the-book butt-shaking.

(On a side note:
The music industry must wake up every day thanking our society for the never ending double standards and warped reactions around sexuality and nudity that help sell even the most mundane expressions of popular culture.)

If you feel a painful lack of ass in your musical diet we're sure you can google the Anaconda video, but we urge you to have a look and listen to a better, more creative and fun combination of music and images. And here it is:

Kate Bush live on stage tonight!

Kate Bush on the cover of this month's Mojo published today.

As we publish this item on the Radio Dupree blog the first of 22 shows is less than one hour away. It will be interesting to see if all of the 3 600 people in the sold-out Hammersmith Eventim Apollo venue can keep cameras and mobile phones in their pockets, and thereby accept Kate's wishes posted on her homepage a few days ago:

Hallo,
Many thanks to everyone who sent such lovely wishes for my birthday. I had a wonderful day.
We’re all very excited about the upcoming shows and are working very hard in preparation. It’s going very well indeed.
I have a request for all of you who are coming to the shows :
We have purposefully chosen an intimate theatre setting rather than a large venue or stadium. It would mean a great deal to me if you would please refrain from taking photos or filming during the shows. I very much want to have contact with you as an audience, not with iphones, ipads or cameras. I know it’s a lot to ask but it would allow us to all share in the experience together.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Respectfully yours,
Kate.

So ... here's a few links to items on the katebushnews.com site about the media blitz that is on due to Kate Bush playing her first live gigs in 35 years.
We are looking forward to the reviews of the premiere evening!

Kate Bush on TV, radio ... and stage!

Tonight - Friday August 22 2014 - BBC 4 TV will air a new documentary about Kate’s career titled The Kate Bush Story: Running Up That Hill at 9.10 pm UK time

People popping up in the documentary include Del Palmer, David Gilmour, Lindsay Kemp, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Stephen Fry and Nigel Kennedy.

That is followed by a another hour with the self explanatory title Kate Bush at the BBC.

And - as per usual - you can't watch this if you live outside the UK without a bit of trickery:

You will be better off listening to the three hour BBC Radio 6 Kate Bush Special Sunday morning at 7 am local time.

More here!

What's all this about then? The return of Kate Bush on stage Monday evening. The first of 22 shows and her first shows since 1979.

Radio Dupree will of course catch one of the shows and report. Here's what the ticket looks like:

Napoleon Murphy Brock and Mats Öberg play Zappa

Yesterday Zappa sideman Napoleon Murphy Brock and Swedish pianist Mats Öberg did a concert in Umeå, Sweden. According to Radio Dupree's correspondent the highlight was a set of several Zappa songs played in sequence: Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance/What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body/Oh No/Son Of Orange County/More Trouble Every Day.

In July they performed with other musicians in Hamburg. Then the repertoire consisted of Zappa, Schubert, Satie and Bach. This time they performed as a duo, and about 75 % of the repertoire consisted of Zappa songs, to the audience's delight.

Legendary TV voice Don Pardo has died

From the album Zappa In New York.
Don Pardo, long time announcer of Saturday Night Live, has passed away at the age of 96.
One of the celebrities that Pardo would announce on the show was Frank Zappa, and Pardo also played a small part on the album Zappa In New York where he introduced a couple of numbers in his very own way.

Chart compiled by listeners voting
on the songs they hear on Radio Dupree

And with her return to the stage next month it is fitting that a track from her last tour (1978!) makes it to numer one this month. Kate Bush live EP consists of four tracks and it's not often that singles or EP:s top the Radio Dupree chart.

We also note that although we've been playing both the stereo and mono versions of The Beatles A Hard Day's Night, it is mono all the way for the three songs that chart this month.

But Beatles isn't the only group with more than one song chrating. The same goes for Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Parliament and Sting!

Tommy Ramone - last original member of the Ramones - has passed away

We are saddened to announce the passing of Tommy Ramone (nee Erdelyi), the original drummer for the Ramones, earlier today, 11 July 2014.

"It wasn't just music in The Ramones: it was an idea. It was bringing back a whole feel that was missing in rock music – it was a whole push outwards to say something new and different. Originally it was just an artistic type of thing; finally I felt it was something that was good enough for everybody." - Tommy Ramone, 1978

The summer edition of our chart is mostly well-known names as far as the Radio Dupree Top 20 goes. However, a couple of rare finds can be done in the Top 10:
1970's Glam-pop-rock band Sweet sticks out, as does Japanese band Passepied. Sweet has charted before but it's the first time for Passepied, formed in 2009 and with a brand new album out called 幕の内ISM. That's MAKUNOUCHIISM.

Steely Dan 2014 tour has started, No shows outside the US and Canada.

The Jamalot Ever After 2014 tour kicked off in Portland, Oregon yesterday. If you're interested in what Steely Dan played a setlist is available over on the dandom.com BlueBook as well as Steely Dan fan groups on Facebook.

According to reports a short interview with Donald Fagen in the June 2014 issue of Mojo Magazine quote him saying that the tour will USA/Canada only. No shows in other countries.
Bad news for overseas fans who'll have to hope for a change and a 2015 tour.

The 2013 tour was also exclusively US/Canada dates while the 2011 tour saw the band playing both Australia and New Zealand. (No Steely Dan tour in 2012.)
The last time they played Europe was back in 2009 while Japan hasn't had a touring visit since 2007.

Oh, well... There's always 2015!

Opening act for most of the shows this time around is The Bobby Broom Organi-Sation — with Bobby Broom on guitar, Ben Paterson on organ, Makaya McCraven or Kobie Watkins on drums.

Iggy Pop: “The future of rock’n‘roll is Justin Bieber.”

And that's perhaps not what Iggy Pop himself believes. It's part of an Amnesty International anti-torture campaign with the slogan "torture a man and he will tell you anything".

Another man taking part is Dalai Lama:

“A man who does not have a Rolex watch at 50 years old has failed in his life.”

Yes. Yes is doing it. Again.

2014. And nothing much has changed. Roger Dean is still in charge of the cover art. And Yes is ready to release another new album July 21.

Titled Heaven And Earth it is produced by Roy Thomas Baker. The label releasing the album is called Frontier Records and also has new records from Ted Nugent (ShutUp&Jam) plus Chicago (Now - Chicago XXXVI) set for a July, 2014 release.
